The Poster “Lapbooks and Dioramas”, which won the 1st prize for poster presentation, was presented at the 1st Hellenic Conference on Early Language Learning which organized by PEAP in Anavyssos at Eden Beach Resort (14-16 June).
The poster represents two years’ work with young learners at public primary school. Unfortunately, the pupils’ projects were digitally recorded and saved only the second year.
Lapbooks and Dioramas are fantastic, new, creative educational tools which help children learn, review and display what they are learning.
Learners of all ages and levels enjoy making them. I have used them with second, third, forth, fifth and sixth graders.(at 3rd primary school of Oraiokastro in 2012 and at 1st primary school in Stavroupoli, Thessaloniki IN 2013) Each class had 15-20 pupils and each one of them produced a unique piece of work that reflected the creator’s personality Second and third graders from Oraiokastro made rooms of a house in shoeboxes (MY HOUSE DIORAMA) , third and forth graders from Stavroupoli made habitat dioramas for animals in a zoo and wrote mini-books and profile cards. Fifth graders from Stavroupoli made Environment lapbooks. The sixth graders chose topics on their own ( Nutrition , Jobs, Sports, Animals, Fashion and shopping, Imaginary Creatures, Fun and Games) and needed very little guidance from me. Most of the pupil’s projects have been uploaded on you tube You can watch them at

What is a lapbook? It is an inexpensive file folder filled with colourful ‘foldables’, drawings, layered or expandable mini-books which are multi-dimensional organizers that create a sense of mystery and adventure.
The cost varies from 50c to 1E depending on the quantity and quality of the materials (embellishments are optional) We made more than sixty lapbooks this year!
What is a diorama? It is a three dimensional model of a landscape, event, space, scene or room which is constructed in a cardboard box-usually a shoebox- using natural materials (stones, plants, bark, sand, fabric) and /or plastic or clay models, accompanied by writing (on a card or a booklet)
